Before joining this list, please consider its principles, as described at http://c18.net/scedhs-csecs/list.grad.html.
PLEASE PRINT AND SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
Thank you for your interest in the CSECS/SCEDHS graduate-students
e-mail list. We remind you that only graduate students and junior
(that is, not tenure-track) scholars are invited to join. If you are
a senior faculty member, we hope that you will encourage your
students to join. You might be aware of C18-L, which provides an
excellent forum for scholars at all levels: contact the listowner,
Kevin Berland <bcj@psu.edu> for
more information.
***** To subscribe *****
To subscribe to the CSECS/SCEDHS list, send an e-mail message from
YOUR OWN e-mail account, to: listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca
(upper or
lower case is acceptable).
In the BODY of your message, type the following command:
subscribe CSECS-GRADSTUDENTS-L yourfirstname yourlastname
For example, if your name were Anna Howe, you would type:
subscribe CSECS-GRADSTUDENTS-L anna howe
Leave the subject line blank. Include nothing else.
You will soon receive a confirmation message, which will provide
further instructions, as well as a description of the list. Kindly
adhere to gentle "netiquette", and keep in mind that your messages
should limit themselves to concerns bearing directly on 18th-century
scholarship and graduate studies. Please avoid sending superfluous
("yes, me too") messages, and be aware that every message sent will
be saved in an electronic archive, which might eventually be posted
on the CSECS/SCEDHS website. The listowner maintains a directory of
all listmembers.
Welcome to the list!
***** Quitting the List *****
You MUST quit the list using the same e-mail you used to subscribe to
the list. The LISTSERV software extracts the e-mail address from the
message you send. If you quit using someone else's system, the other
person, not you, will be removed from the list.
If you want to quit the list, send a message to listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca.
In the BODY of the message type the following command:
signoff CSECS-GRADSTUDENTS-L
***** Sending Mail to the List *****
To send a message to everyone subscribed to the list, send e-mail to
CSECS-GRADSTUDENTS-L@listserv.utoronto.ca
or just REPLY to any message that you received from another
list-member via the list. Remember, when you send e-mail to the list,
everyone on the list (including the list owner) will receive your
message. If you want to send e-mail only to the list owner, see the
following section.
Please use a descriptive Subject heading.
***** Sending Mail to the List Owner *****
You can send e-mail to the list owner, Adam Budd, if you are
experiencing difficulty with the list or if you want to ask a
technical question. You can reach him at
CSECS-GRADSTUDENTS-L-request@listserv.utoronto.ca.
Please contact the list owner only after you have read these
instructions in their entirety.
***** Which is Which? *****
Subscribers are sometimes confused about where to send e-mail:
* To subscribe (join) or signoff (quit) the list, send e-mail to
listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca
and include the appropriate command
(see above) in the BODY of the message. It is this address that
manages membership of the various lists.
* To send a message to everyone currently subscribed to a list, send
e-mail to
CSECS-GRADSTUDENTS-L@listserv.utoronto.ca
* To send a message to only the list owner, send e-mail to
CSECS-GRADSTUDENTS-L-request@listserv.utoronto.ca
***** Setting Digest Mode *****
You can request to have your messages sent in digest mode. In digest
mode, individual messages that would normally be sent throughout the
day are combined into a single message and sent out just once. This
is convenient if the list is a busy one, or if you just want to print
all the daily messages and read them offline.
To set digest mode, send e-mail, from your subscribed address, to
listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca.
In the body of the message type:
set CSECS-GRADSTUDENTS-L digest
***** Turning Off Mail Temporarily *****
You can temporarily suspend delivery of e-mail from a particular list
if you will not be accessing your e-mail for a while (e.g., vacation,
illness) and you don't want your e-mail inbox filled with many
messages. Messages that are sent during the time you have it turned
off will NOT be stored and sent to you when you resume delivery.
To turn off mail temporarily, send e-mail to listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca.
In the body of the message type:
set CSECS-GRADSTUDENTS-L nomail
***** Resuming Delivery *****
When you know you will be checking your e-mail regularly again, you
will want to resume delivery.
To resume delivery, send e-mail to listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca
In the body of the message type:
set CSECS-GRADSTUDENTS-L mail
***** Subscription Renewal *****
When you receive a renewal message from LISTSERV, which will occur 12
months after you first subscribe, press REPLY, erase the contents of
the message, and type OK in the body of the message (and nothing
else) and send. If you fail to renew within 21 days you will be
removed from the list and you will have to resubscribe.
***** Who To Call For Help *****
If you are experiencing difficulty using the list or have other
concerns related to the list you are subscribed to, you should
contact the list owner.
